Ayurveda Through the Year: May
Honoring the Inner Fire (Without Getting Burned)
Dear friends,
Welcome to May — the threshold of true summer. ☀️
The energy is vibrant. The air is warmer. Days grow longer and more ambitious.
But here’s what Ayurveda gently reminds us:
Just because energy is rising… doesn’t mean you should burn yourself out.
This is Pitta season beginning to take charge — the dosha of fire + water, sharpness + intensity. And if you don’t stay cool — mentally and physically — it can lead to:
- Irritability, impatience, frustration 😤
- Heartburn or sensitive digestion 🔥
- Skin flare-ups or rashes
- Perfectionism and over-controlling tendencies
The lesson of May?
Lead with love — not pressure. Cool your system, soften your mind.
🌞 MAY DOSHA SNAPSHOT
- Dominant Dosha: Pitta rising
- Qualities to balance: Heat, sharpness, intensity
- Key goal: Stay cool, avoid overload, and choose compassion over competition
✅ Recommended Practices This Month
- Wake early and start slow: avoid jumping into work mode instantly
- Gentle movement: walking, yin yoga, or swimming if available
- Midday rest or pause when the heat is strongest
- Meditation with visualization (think: water, moonlight, blue sky)
- Use cooling oils: brahmi oil for the scalp, coconut oil for body
❌ What to Avoid in May
- Skipping meals (especially lunch — key for Pitta digestion)
- Intense arguments or debates (yes, even in your own head!)
- Overworking or over-scheduling
- Hot, spicy foods — they add to the internal fire
- Being too hard on yourself — emotionally or mentally
🍽 FOOD FOCUS: Cooling, Moist, and Mild
🟢 Eat more of:
- Cucumbers, zucchinis, mint, cilantro
- Melons, pears, sweet apples
- Basmati rice, oats, barley
- Cooling teas: rose, hibiscus, chamomile, peppermint
- Ghee (moderate amount) and coconut
🔴 Avoid or minimize:
- Garlic, onions, chilies
- Fried foods and fermented foods
- Tomatoes, vinegar, mustard
- Alcohol and caffeine (especially midday)
🧴 AYURVEDIC BODY CARE: Coconut Oil + Brahmi Head Massage
As the heat rises, self-massage with coconut oil keeps the skin calm and mind grounded.
🌀 Try this once or twice a week:
- Warm coconut oil and massage it onto your body (especially feet, chest, arms)
- Apply a little brahmi oil or coconut oil to your scalp
- Leave on for 20–30 minutes, then shower
This cools the nervous system and supports mental clarity.
🥗 Simple Recipe: Cooling Pitta-Balancing Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 cucumber
- Handful of mint leaves
- 1 small pear
- ½ tsp fennel powder
- Splash of coconut water
Blend & enjoy chilled — refreshing, hydrating, and easy on digestion.
🧘🏽♀️ May Reflection
Where are you pushing too hard?
Pitta wants to lead. But remember — leadership isn’t force.
It’s clarity without aggression. Strength without strain.
This month, try this mantra:
“I lead from calm. I act from care.”
Sending you cool breezes and steady strength,
Martin & Monika
