It’s Okay to Ask — Just Ask From the Heart

It’s Okay to Ask — Just Ask From the Heart

There’s a beautiful and unusual section in the Vedic chant known as Sri Rudram, one of the oldest and most powerful hymns in Indian spiritual tradition.

Part of it is called the Chamakam, and it’s essentially a prayer that repeats two simple words:
“Cha me” — “and me.”

Over and over, line after line, it goes:

  • Give me clarity — and me
  • Give me strength — and me
  • Give me joy — and me
  • Give me peace — and me

It’s like a sacred shopping list.
But not the way we think of greed or excess.
This is desire with awareness.
It’s a reminder that it’s okay — even holy — to ask for what your soul truly needs.

We live in a time where asking can feel like weakness. Where people say, “You should be content with what you have,” or “Don’t expect too much.”
But the Chamakam says something else.

It says:
You are allowed to want.
You are allowed to pray.
You are allowed to need.

Just be honest. Just be clear. Just be rooted.

When you ask from your deepest self — not your ego — your desires become doorways, not distractions.

So maybe the invitation isn’t to stop wanting.
It’s to want well.

To want from your heart.
To want things that help you grow.
To want healing, wholeness, simplicity — for yourself and others.

There’s no shame in asking.
There’s only power in asking from love.
