One Light, Many Names: A Devotee’s Journey Beyond Labels

One Light, Many Names: A Devotee’s Journey Beyond Labels

Let’s talk about something simple, but big: God.

Or maybe you call it the Divine… Source… Universe… Shiva… Vishnu… doesn’t matter. Because that’s the point.

This piece — originally a poetic offering by a devoted worshipper of Shiva, written in praise of Vishnu — brings forward a truth we all need to remember: the Divine isn’t bound by names. It’s not limited by form. It doesn’t belong to one tradition, or one path, or one way of praying.

And yet, we humans often get stuck in labels. We argue, divide, and even judge, based on which form or name someone prefers. But at the heart of all genuine paths is one thread — Love. A kind of reverence that can’t be boxed in.

The original writer of this verse was a Siva bhakta (a devotee of Shiva). And yet, with total humility and clarity, he bows before Vishnu — not just politely, but with full heart. Why? Because he’s not interested in separation. He’s interested in truth. In essence. In the One Light that shines through all forms.

And here’s what’s beautiful: this wasn’t abstract for him. He had a vision — a deep, direct inner experience. In a moment of stillness, Vishnu (as Varadaraja) revealed Himself in his mind’s eye. The writer didn’t fight it or try to explain it away. He surrendered. He recognized that form as another doorway into the Infinite.

There’s a verse in the Bhagavad Gita where Krishna says,
“Of all the months, I am Margashirsha (Dhanurmasa).”
This is the same sacred time of year — when the earth is closest to the sun. It’s a time of heightened energy, clarity, and devotion.

And in this spirit, the writer sees Vishnu — standing on the serpent Adisesha, surrounded by celestial beauty, radiating compassion. What does he feel?

Not competition between Shiva and Vishnu. Not confusion.
Just awe.
Just surrender.
Just love.

So here’s the message:
You don’t need to fight over which form is “right.”
Because the Divine isn’t either/or — it’s both/and.
It’s One Light… with many names.

And your job?
Just love sincerely. Just open your heart.
The rest takes care of itself.
