Cooling Down with Care

We hope this message finds you well — and not too overheated!

August is a fiery month in most parts of Europe and the US. The heat, the long days, the intensity of sunlight — all of it naturally increases Pitta dosha in the body and mind.

In Ayurveda, Pitta is the energy of fire and water. It governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, and also how we process emotions. When it’s in balance, we feel focused, energized, and clear. When it’s out of balance… we overheat — physically and emotionally.

So how do we care for ourselves in this season?

Let’s take a look.


☀️ AUGUST TENDENCIES: Pitta Time

  • Elements active: Fire + water
  • Qualities: Hot, sharp, intense, oily
  • Common symptoms: Irritability, skin breakouts, acid reflux, excessive sweating, inflammation, impatience

What to FOCUS on this month

  • Stay cool — inside and out
    Take walks in the early morning or evening. Avoid peak sun. Stay hydrated (not with ice-cold water — just room temp or slightly cool).
  • Go easy on intensity
    Choose yoga over high-heat cardio. Gentle, cooling asanas like forward folds, twists, and moon salutations are wonderful now.
  • Use coconut oil
    A gentle self-massage with coconut oil in the morning is great to cool the body and soothe the nervous system.
  • Embrace calm, spaciousness, and creativity
    Read. Nap under a tree. Journal. Less “doing,” more “being.”

What to AVOID this month

  • Excessive heat (spicy food, alcohol, too much sun)
  • Overworking, multitasking, pushing productivity
  • Staying up too late (aim for 10 PM bedtime to keep fire calm)
  • Arguments, debates — avoid mental heat too!

🍽️ FOOD FOCUS: What to Eat in August

🟢 Yes, please:

  • Cooling foods: cucumbers, melons, zucchini, mint, cilantro, coconut
  • Grains like basmati rice and oats
  • Fresh herbs, mild spices (fennel, coriander, cumin)
  • Ghee (calms internal heat!)
  • Sweet, bitter, astringent tastes

🔴 Avoid or limit:

  • Tomatoes, garlic, onions, chilies, pickles
  • Fermented or sour foods
  • Red meat, aged cheese, deep-fried dishes
  • Too much caffeine or wine

🌿 Small Self-Care Ritual: Cooling Coconut Oil Massage

Before your shower, take 5–10 minutes to massage cool or room-temperature coconut oil onto your body. It hydrates, reduces internal heat, and calms inflammation. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water (no soap needed on the whole body every day — less is more).

Bonus: Add a few drops of lavender or sandalwood essential oil to the coconut oil for extra cooling energy.


🍧 Simple August Recipe: Cooling Coconut Chia Pudding

Ingredients:

  • 400 ml coconut milk (or oat milk)
  • 3 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp maple syrup (optional)
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom
  • Fresh seasonal fruits: blueberries, mango, figs

Instructions:

  1. Mix coconut milk, chia seeds, maple syrup, and cardamom in a bowl or jar.
  2. Let it sit in the fridge overnight (or at least 3–4 hours).
  3. Top with fresh fruits before serving.
  4. Eat chilled — a perfect summer breakfast or snack.
