Ayurveda Through the Year: March

Ayurveda Through the Year: March

Lighten, Cleanse & Awaken

Dear friends,

March brings a subtle turning of the tide.

The snow begins to melt (even if just in our imagination), the birds return, and the energy in the body starts to shift. But here’s the catch — while nature is moving forward, Kapha is still holding strong.

That means:

  • Your body might feel heavy or foggy
  • You may notice excess mucus, congestion, or allergies
  • Motivation can lag — even when the sun comes out
  • You might feel sleepy, resistant, or emotionally dull

It’s the natural “hangover” of winter’s depth.

But here’s the Ayurvedic magic: March is a powerful month for resetting.
The best way to welcome spring is not to sprint, but to lighten up — slowly and mindfully.

🌦 MARCH DOSHA SNAPSHOT

  • Dominant Dosha: Kapha (still elevated), Vata begins to reduce
  • Qualities to balance: Heavy, cold, oily, congested
  • Key goal: Stimulate movement, remove residue, prepare digestion

Recommended Practices This Month

  • Daily breathwork (pranayama) – especially Kapalabhati or Nadi Shodhana
  • Early rising + morning movement – to get the lymph moving
  • Decluttering – your closet, kitchen, mind
  • Light meals – favour broth, kitchari, or steamed vegetables
  • Triphala at night – supports gentle detox and elimination

What to Avoid in March

  • Heavy breakfasts (opt for light or skip if digestion is slow)
  • Oversleeping
  • Cold drinks or smoothies (especially in the morning)
  • Emotional avoidance — it’s a great month to feel and clear
  • Pushing through resistance with force — invite softness and rhythm instead

🍽 FOOD FOCUS: Clean & Warming

🟢 Favour these:

  • Cooked leafy greens
  • Spices: turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon
  • Lentils, quinoa, barley
  • Warm soups with mustard seeds and cumin
  • Astringent fruits: apples, pomegranate, berries

🔴 Reduce or avoid:

  • Dairy (especially cold milk and cheese)
  • Red meat and fried foods
  • Bananas and overly sweet fruits
  • Bread and heavy flours

🧖♀️ AYURVEDIC BODY CARE: Herbal Steam + Oil

Once a week, try this:

  1. Add eucalyptus, mint, or tulsi leaves to boiling water
  2. Inhale the steam gently (towel over head optional)
  3. Follow with a short massage using warm mustard oil or dry brushing

This clears congestion, boosts circulation, and lifts your energy.

🥄 Simple Recipe: Cleansing Beetroot Curry

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium beets, peeled & grated
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
  • Curry leaves (optional)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • Coconut milk (½ cup)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Sauté mustard seeds, cumin, and hing in coconut oil.
  2. Add ginger, beets, and a splash of water.
  3. Cook until soft, then stir in coconut milk and simmer for 5–7 min.
  4. Serve warm with quinoa or plain rice.

This is light, vibrant, and digestive-friendly. Perfect for March!

🌱 March Reflection

You don’t have to force a full restart.
You just have to begin clearing space.

Notice what feels stale.
In your body. In your mind. In your daily rhythm.

And gently ask:
“What would feel lighter?”

Sometimes, that’s where the new season begins.

With love,
Martin & Monika
