Ayurveda Through the Year: February

Ayurveda Through the Year: February

Lighten the Mood, Prepare for the Shift

Dear friends,

February can feel like a strange in-between.

The days are still cold, the light is still soft, and yet — there’s something stirring underneath. The deep rest of winter is slowly giving way to the early whisper of spring. But this is also when Kapha dosha reaches its peak.

You might feel it as:

  • Heaviness in the body or mind
  • Low energy despite resting
  • Cravings for comfort (food, screens, silence)
  • More mucus or congestion
  • Emotional flatness or fog

And that’s perfectly normal. February is a time when stillness begins to stagnate — unless we gently shake it up.

Ayurveda teaches us: don’t rush into spring. But also… don’t sleep through the signs. The body is ready to lighten up. The mind is ready for more clarity. Let’s support that.

💧🌬 FEBRUARY DOSHA SNAPSHOT

  • Dominant Dosha: Kapha at its peak
  • Qualities to balance: Heavy, cold, moist, dull
  • Common imbalances: Sluggish digestion, congestion, sadness, resistance to change

Recommended Practices This Month

  • Wake up before 7am – avoid morning heaviness
  • Light movement daily – even 20 mins helps (yoga, brisk walk, dynamic asana)
  • Dry body brushing – to stimulate lymph and circulation
  • Eat your largest meal at lunchtime – when digestion is strongest
  • Try short bursts of inspiration – uplifting music, podcasts, even rearranging your space

Avoid These Habits Now

  • Oversleeping or napping during the day
  • Excess dairy and cold food (especially ice cream or yogurt)
  • Eating after 8pm
  • Skipping movement for multiple days in a row
  • Deep introspection that spirals into stagnation — go light instead

🍽 FOOD FOCUS: Clear and Uplift

🟢 Favour these:

  • Bitter and pungent tastes (arugula, radish, kale, mustard seeds)
  • Light grains: barley, millet, buckwheat
  • Cooked greens with lemon
  • Mung soup with warming spices
  • Herbal teas: cinnamon-ginger, tulsi, fennel

🔴 Reduce or avoid:

  • Heavy sweets
  • Wheat and cheese
  • Oily, fried food
  • Heavy meats

🧖 AYURVEDIC BODY CARE: Uplifting Massage with Dry Brushing

Before your morning shower:

  1. Use a dry body brush or soft exfoliating glove
  2. Brush from feet toward heart in long strokes, and circular motion on joints
  3. Follow with a light massage using warm sesame or mustard oil
  4. Shower and rinse with warm water

This stimulates lymph, warms the body, and improves mood.

🥣 Simple Recipe: Mung Dal Lemon Soup

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup split yellow mung dal (or red lentils)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • Salt and pepper
  • ½ lemon, squeezed
  • Optional: chopped spinach or coriander

Instructions:

  1. Wash dal/lentils and simmer in 3 cups of water with turmeric.
  2. In a separate pan, sauté cumin and ginger in ghee or olive oil.
  3. Combine both, add greens, simmer until soft.
  4. Squeeze lemon just before serving.

It’s light, cleansing, and mood-lifting — perfect for February.

🌱 February Reflection

Kapha is the dosha of love, loyalty, and steadiness — but when left unattended, it becomes stuck.

So this month, try to keep moving. Gently, lovingly.

  • Move your body.
  • Move your thoughts.
  • Move your space.

Let something shift — not for the sake of productivity, but for aliveness.

With warmth and care,
Martin & Monika
